When Life Falls Apart

The other night, close to midnight, I woke up suddenly and poked hubby. “What was that? I heard a loud noise outside the patio door.”

Being the hero that he is, he got up from a sound sleep. He opened the patio door to find a squirrel splattered on the pool deck. He had fallen through a panel of the screen above the swimming pool.

I imagine how shocked and hurt he was when the support underneath him caved in.

That could have happened to us, too. When tragedy struck our family, we could’ve fallen and splattered on the ground of grief.

But for years, with verse upon verse from God’s Word, promise upon promise from Scripture, we built our house on Jesus, the Rock. And when anguish threatened to shake our foundation, we stood firm.

How about you? What material is your foundation made of? Is it made of the sand of self-ambition, pride, self-reliance? Jesus knows the storms to come, the shaky ground, the fierce of the wind and the violent tremors.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27).

Father, storms come often and the wind of adversity blows when least expected. But I know if we put your Word into practice, we build our lives on the solid Rock. I rejoice because I feel safe. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What have you built your home on?

What storms have you withstood?

What do you need for your house to be built on the solid rock?
