Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.
As a senior in High school, I knew exactly what I wanted to do: be a history teacher. Every year, I won the school prize for history and so I was set upon going to Stirling University and major in European and World History. I even went for a personal interview with Nigel Tranter, a great historian and prolific Scottish writer.
Then I fell in love with alcohol and, although I had the grades to get into college, I wanted to go out into the workplace and make money. My dream of being a history teacher was shattered and my life started going downhill.
But the LORD had a different purpose and within a couple of years, I was heading to Glasgow University to become a minister. I enjoyed the courses, and even managed to do some European history whilst I was there. It seems that because I was now following God’s plan, He was allowing me to fulfill a few of my own.
I don’t know where I would be if I had gone to Stirling University, but this I know: God works His purposes out no matter what choices we intend or even make.
Perhaps you’re facing some touch decisions today or have been contemplating a change in your career. In the midst of all your thinking, ask God what He wants you to do. Don’t be afraid of the answer and don’t be uncertain about how to get there. God’s purpose will prevail and He will supply your every need.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You have a plan for each of our lives and a purpose for us to fulfill. Sometimes, like Jonah, we run away from your choices. Today, we place our lives into Your hands. Guide us and empower us as we accept and embrace Your Purpose. In Your Holy name, we pray. Amen.
