One day, I was in a men’s clothing outlet store. It was actually a factory where they made sport coats and suits. The only dressing room was also the men’s room, so there was not a great deal of privacy when trying on the garments. A young fellow was there, who was also trying on several suits. I think he tried on every suit his size. It appeared he was going to buy several. I introduced myself. A big smile came on his face.
“Yes sir,” he said repeating my name, “you’re the one who led me to Christ!”
I’m sure I appeared very puzzled. Who was this guy? I could not remember seeing him before.
“I’m sure you don’t remember me,” he said, “but I sure do remember you. Late one Friday night, my friend Jim Bergman brought me by your house. You witnessed to me and I received Christ. I went back and joined my family’s church. My life has never been the same. Christ forgave me, changed me, and called me into the gospel ministry. I am on my way to Bible school, in a couple days. That’s why I’m buying these suits!”
I recalled the night when Jim brought this young man by my house. He looked very different then and I realized why I had not recognized him. That first night, he was dressed “hippie” style with long hair and beard. He did not really seem interested in being there or in hearing about the Lord.
I was somewhat miffed at Jim. Why didn’t he lead his friend to Christ himself rather than interrupt my television program? Jim had been trained in using the Four Spiritual Laws. Why didn’t he do it? But Jim had done what he could and needed some help. Here they were, one scared “witness” and one seemingly disinterested “prospect”.
So, we shared the gospel. On our knees, I heard his prayer. Was it real? I had my doubts. Since I never heard from him again, I felt my suspicions were verified. Months later, God showed me how little I know about His Grace and His faithfulness in blessing His Word.
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isaiah 55:11
This I know for sure … God’s Word does not return to Him void.
And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Hebrews 6:11-12
