I live my life in total bliss.
It has been this way ever since I went into a care home, in August 2024. What I didn’t understand was why my wife looked so stressed all the time.
Then in mid-Feb. 2025, they put me on an airplane and made me sit there for 4 hours. But soon they brought me to a new home, in Alberta. It was bigger, newer, much prettier than my old one, and I was content.
What I didn’t know was how much work had gone into this move. I didn’t understand how hard it had been for my wife to find me a new home to live in, and I especially didn’t know how difficult it was to get me to Alberta. With my restlessness, a 4000 km car ride would not have worked. Even a 4 hour plane ride was suspect, and since most of the major airlines required medical clearances for people with dementia, which I wouldn’t have been granted, my wife had to fight to find an airline that didn’t require a medical clearance. I also didn’t know how hard it was for her to find medical staff to travel with me. With professional quotes from 12,000 to 60,000 Canadian dollars, she really had to search to find an affordable solution.
I was in Alberta for about 4 months when my wife started looking stressed again… What was her problem?
I didn’t know that she was having to pay over 6000 Canadian dollars a month to maintain me in the new home. Nor was I aware that after three months, I would be eligible for a government sponsored home that would cost a fraction of that amount. I had no clue about the procedure involved in getting me on the waiting list for such a government-sponsored home. Hey, I didn’t even realize she was the one doing my laundry. All I knew was that I was getting good food, I had a comfortable, warm bed, I had clean clothes to wear every day, and my wife came to visit me often.
I was living in total bliss… I mean, even though my wife may have done plenty of work to get me to Alberta, I wasn’t required to do a single thing…
Isn’t this how we, as Christians, should all be living? In total bliss?
Doesn’t the Psalmist tell us, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken” (Ps. 55:22 NIV)? And what about Jesus Himself? Didn’t He say, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30 NIV)?
Then why are so many Christians all stressed out? Shouldn’t we all be living like me? In total bliss, completely unaware of the intricate plans being made all around us?
It never ceases to amaze me how God works things out.
Take these devotionals, for example. We often get emails thanking us for this or that devotional that they felt was written especially for them at that moment. What those readers don’t know is that these devotionals are written and organized ahead of time and put in a year-long queue!
There’s no human way for us to know what our audience needs to hear at any one point in time, but God knows. He knows exactly what you will go through and when, and months, sometimes even years in advance, He is busy inspiring people to write things that will be published at just the time when you will need them!
Think about it: That person who just happened to come along and help you when your car slipped into the ditch. Why was that person even there? Why did they care? Because God had created them years in advance with a caring heart, and He orchestrated the exact circumstances that would put them where you needed them to be at just the right time!
With a God who cares that much, we have no reason to live in any way other than—Total Bliss!
So the next time you are tempted to worry and fret, remember the words of Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (NIV)
Instead of getting upset, hand it over to God, thank Him in advance for what He will do, and then sit back and live like me: in TOTAL BLISS!
(Do you think maybe my stressed-out wife needs to read this as well?)
