When the Thrill Is Gone

Restore to me the joy of your salvation.

(Psalm 51:12 NIV).

“What is that sound?” a woman asked while visiting a nature center.

“It’s the frogs trilling for a mate,” explained the naturalist. “We have a pair in the science room. But they’ve been together so long, they no longer sing to each other.”

The woman nodded knowingly. “The trill is gone.”

It’s not just true for frogs. For many of us, there comes a time when the “trill” seems to fade from our relationships, our work, or even our walk with God.  What once made us excited, passionate, or joy-filled can start to feel routine.

The church in Ephesus knew something about that. Jesus said to them in Revelation 2:4, “You have forsaken the love you had at first.” (NIV) They were still faithful, still busy, still showing up. But something vital was missing — the sparkle, the song, the trill.

But just because the trill is gone doesn’t mean it’s gone forever. Jesus didn’t scold the Ephesians to shame them; He invited them back. He told them to “remember,” “repent,” and “do the things you did at first” (Revelation 2:5 NIV). In other words: recall what first stirred your heart, realign your steps toward him, and reawaken your love through action.

Maybe the trill has dimmed in your marriage, your friendships, or your faith.  Ask God to rekindle what feels like it’s slipped away. Sometimes it’s as simple as slowing down long enough to notice the blessings you’ve been overlooking. Other times it takes intentional effort: a handwritten note, an unhurried prayer, a walk together, a fresh dive into God’s Word.

The psalmist prayed, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation” (Psalm 51:12 NIV). That’s a prayer God still answers. Joy can be restored. Love can be renewed.

So, if you find yourself nodding along, thinking, “The trill is gone,” take heart. God is in the business of restoration. With his help, the song can come back stronger, deeper, and more beautiful than ever.

Prayer: Lord, when the “trill” feels gone and life feels routine, remind us of the joy we first had in you. Restore to us the joy of salvation and rekindle our love for you and for others. Help us to see your blessings with fresh eyes and to walk in renewed faith each day.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
