“And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.”
(Luke 4:16 ESV)
“Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days, he reasoned with them from the Scriptures.”
(Acts 17:2 ESV)
Has your life become routine? Do you do the same thing at the same time each day?
I have a routine. I didn’t realize it until recently. I get up early, so I am ready when a couple of my great grandkids get dropped off. The first thing I do as I get up is to pray. As I am getting dressed, I quote Psalm 24, Psalm 25:1-2 and 12:15, and Psalm 91. Then I sit down and read my Bible for a while, then send out the daily devotional. By then, the kids are coming in.
Oxford Languages defines routine as “a sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program.” I follow a routine. But the rest of my day is up for grabs.
I read several passages in the Bible where it states, “as was his custom.” Even Jesus had a routine. He went to the synagogue every Sabbath “as was His custom.”
Is it wrong to have a routine? I think it is if it interferes with your walk with Jesus. Jesus should be front and center always. No matter what comes up or if it interferes with our routine. Put Jesus first, and then you can deal with your routine. I don’t think anything is more important than spending time with Jesus. If everyone spent time with Jesus, the world would be a better place.
Have a blessed day, and step out of your routine for a while.
