Follow the Right Path

by | Aug 3, 2021 | Humility, Pride

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your path.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV)

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105 NKJV)

I was sort of watching, ok listening, to a movie yesterday. One statement caught my attention. One of the main characters volunteered at a children’s hospital unknown to his brother. When questioned why he replied, “You do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do. Not to brag about it.”

That got me to thinking. How many times do we do something to help someone, then go about bragging about it? That is exactly what a lot of us do. Ok, most of us do. We do it for the praise of others. But what we should be doing is keeping quiet about it. The world doesn’t need to know.

Maybe by being obedient to God in helping someone, there was a blessing coming for us. But by telling others what we did, blowing our own horn so to speak, we may just have blocked the blessing that was coming to us. God wants to bless us but he doesn’t want us to go around telling others what we do for others. It’s not that He wants to keep our good works secret, he just doesn’t want us bragging on ourselves.

We need to be obedient to God. He loves us and will never lead us down the wrong path. The devil comes and whispers in your ear, “No one knows you just gave that homeless person money. Tell someone. It will make you feel better.” And it does, for a moment. But that feeling doesn’t last. But the feeling you get when you do something for someone does. Especially if you don’t brag about it. Just remember, “pride goes before a fall.” Leave the pride alone and stay true to the following of God. He will steer you right every time.

Have a blessed day.
