Psalm 37:4-5 – Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it. (NASB)
Philippians 4:19 – You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, his generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus. (MSG)
Jeremiah 33:3 – Call to me and I will answer you. I’ll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own. (MSG)
I don’t dream often, but recently I had a dream that was so real. It was kind of mixed up — like dreams are — but there was such a message in this dream.
After visiting with a friend in her home, I went to drive home. I could see the car across the street, but at the same time, it was in a huge parking lot. I would head towards where I thought it was, only to be disappointed. I would then rush off to another location, but not find it there. This continued for hours. I was totally exhausted. I needed my car to go home. Finally, I cried out to God, saying that I couldn’t find the car. I told Him I was helpless and I needed Him. As clear as can be, I heard God say, “Yes, you do need Me. I will help you!” What a relief! I knew He would help.
The next thing I heard Him say was this: “You are helpless to overcome your food intake as well. You can’t do it in your own strength, but I will help you!”
You see, I have an addiction — an addiction to food — the comfort foods like breads, desserts, and peanut butter. I chase after them to fill my need, just like I ran looking for my car in the parking lot. I think I need carbohydrates to meet my needs.
This dream was so impressive and so dramatic and so real. I was shaken up when I awoke. And yet at the same time, I was comforted. I knew God was willing and able to help me to overcome my addiction.
Jesus Christ wants to be our strength in every area of our lives. He wants to meet all of our needs. The only way for Him to do that is for us to ask Him, often many times a day, and to trust Him to do as He says.
Prayer: Thank You, Lord Jesus, for speaking to us in dreams. Sometimes that’s the best way for us to hear from You. Thank You that You promise to meet all of our needs. So many times, we try to fill that void with other things — things like food, drugs, toys, busyness, and workaholism. You want to be the centre of our lives. Help us to recognize our neediness and to run to You with our emptiness for You to fill. Amen.
