Studying the Word

“So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.” – Nehemiah 8:2-3

Vsevolod Lytkin from Siberia has a wonderful testimony on how studying the Bible brought him to Christ. His parents were atheistic university professors at a local university who raised their son to “think for himself”. During his teen years, he struggled with many spiritual questions. When the communists told him there was no god, he reasoned that their might be a God and so began a search for reading material where he might find the answers.

The only books of religion available at his local library were atheistic, but they often quoted verses from the Bible to mock or refute them. His greatest discovery was a set of encyclopedia on atheism. Vsevolod went though each volume of the encyclopedia and hand copied each Bible verse. It was not very long before he began to pray to God and Vsevolod asked the Lord to forgive his sins.

Today, Vsevolod Lytkin is a Lutheran pastor with the Siberian Christian Mission in Novosibirsk, Siberia. His church is the parent church that has established 14 smaller churches throughout Siberia.

Are you hungry for the Word of God? Today in prayer, spend some time thanking Christ for His Word and then take some extra moments to study your Bible.

“We have done almost everything that is possible with these Hebrew and Greek writings. We have overlaid them, clause by clause, with exhaustive commentaries; we have translated them, revised the translations, and quarreled over the revisions…There is yet one thing left to do with the Bible: simply read it” – Richard Moulton

God’s Word: “I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.” – Psalm 119:14-16
