When Everything Changes But Jesus…

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

(Hebrews 13:8 NIV)

Here are a few new “concerns” for the Boomer generation:

Then: Long hair.  Now: Longing for hair.
Then: Acid rock.  Now: Acid reflux. Then: Moving to California because it was cool.  Now: Moving to California because it’s warm.
Then: Paar.  Now: AARP.
Then: Rolling Stones.  Now: Kidney stones.
Then: Obsessing over PSATs.  Now: Obsessing over PSAs.
Then:  Disco.  Now:  Costco.
Then: Getting out to a new, hip joint.  Now: Getting a new hip joint.

Time has a way of humbling us, doesn’t it?  Bodies slow down. Joints complain. Wrinkles appear in places we never expected (sometimes seemingly overnight). The music that once defined our youth now shows up on “classic hits” stations. Friends move away. Loved ones pass on. Children grow up and build lives of their own.  Even the neighborhoods we once knew so well can become unfamiliar.

Life shifts. Seasons change. And if our hearts are anchored only to what is temporary, those changes can leave us feeling unsteady.  That’s why our faith rests on something… someone… who doesn’t change.

Scripture gives us this assurance: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8 NIV). In a world where everything ages, fades, breaks, or moves on, Jesus remains constant. His character doesn’t shift with cultural trends. His promises don’t weaken with time. He doesn’t love us more when we’re young and vibrant, nor less when we’re weary and worn.

What comfort that brings. What security. What peace. We don’t have to face the passing of time alone, frantically trying to hold onto what’s slipping away.  Instead, we rest in the one who never changes, never grows weary, and never lets go.

The same Jesus who walked with us through our youth walks with us now. The same grace that saved us then sustains us today. The same faithfulness that carried us through past trials will carry us through whatever lies ahead. Our circumstances may change dramatically, but our Savior does not. And that unchanging presence is the anchor our souls truly need.

Prayer: Lord, thank you that in every season of life, through every change, loss, and transition, you remain constant. As the years pass and life shifts around us, anchor our hearts in your unchanging love.  May we walk with confidence knowing you remain the same forever. Amen.
