The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.
(Proverbs 22:3 NIV).
A traveler once walked into a small country store and noticed a bold sign on the glass door: “DANGER! BEWARE OF DOG!” Expecting to see a fierce guard dog, he stepped inside and found a harmless old hound snoozing by the cash register.
Puzzled, he asked the owner, “Is that the dog people are supposed to beware of?” “Yep, that’s him.”
The stranger laughed. “That dog doesn’t look dangerous at all. Why in the world would you post that sign?”
The owner smiled and explained, “Because before I put that sign up, folks kept tripping over him.”
The Bible gives us many “warning signs” about things that are easy to trip over if we’re not paying attention. Proverbs reminds us: “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” (Proverbs 22:3 NIV).
That’s what warnings are for. They’re not meant to rob us of joy or to make us cower in fear. They’re there to keep us safe. Just like the shop owner’s sign, God’s Word alerts us to dangers we might otherwise overlook.
Sometimes the threats are obvious, but often they’re subtle. Pride doesn’t usually look dangerous at first. Neither does gossip, envy, or neglecting prayer. Jesus himself gave warnings about subtle sins like, “Beware of covetousness” (Luke 12:15 NIV). That’s why Proverbs calls the wise “prudent”— they pay attention to what’s in front of them.
A prudent person notices the warning signs and steps carefully. The simple person ignores them and ends up getting hurt. God doesn’t post warnings to make life difficult for us. His warning signs are a gift of love, keeping us from unnecessary falls and helping us to live a happier life.
So, the next time you come across a warning in Scripture, remember that it’s not a burden. It’s a blessing. It’s God helping you to avoid a stumble before it happens.
And maybe, just maybe, the next time you see a “Beware of Dog” sign, you’ll smile and think: God’s warnings are always for my good.
Prayer: Father, thank you for the wisdom of your Word and the gentle warnings you give us each day. Help us to be attentive, to see the dangers before us, and to walk wisely in your light. In Jesus’ name, amen.
