Know When to Be Silent

by | Nov 14, 2024 | Anger, Listening, Patience

“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

(Exodus 14:14 ESV)

“Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.”

(Proverbs 17:28 ESV)

According to Oxford Languages, silent is “not making or accompanied by any sound.”

I found this on Facebook and thought it was really good advice. The comments after each one are mine.

7 Places To Stay Silent at All Costs

1. “Be silent if you don’t know the whole story.” — How many times have you heard something and repeated it, not truly knowing the whole story?

2. “Be silent when you feel too emotional.” — Emotions can cause a roller coaster of feelings. Be careful of what you say when you feel emotional.

3. “Be silent in the heat of anger.” — Angry words can  never be taken back. Anything said in the heat of anger can not be taken back. They can cause a permanent hurt in someone.

4. “Be silent if your words can offend a person.” — It’s really easy to get offended. Don’t be the cause of it.

5. “Be silent if your words can destroy a friendship.” — It’s always better to bite your lip and keep quiet if you know it will hurt.

6. “Be silent if you can’t talk without yelling.” — Yelling never accomplishes anything.

7. “Be silent if your silence can save bonds.” — Keeping quiet can save relationships. So, if you keep quiet, it might save a relationship you really want to keep.

So listen to your gut. If it says, “Keep quiet,” then keep your mouth shut. I know it can be hard, but it will save you a lot of grief in the long run.

Have a great day, everyone.
