“Behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21b, KJV)
We, as humans, tend to look at all the wrong places for our answers. The result? We are left unsatisfied. Moody. And at times, discouraged. We look for meaning. We search for hope. We hope for deliverance. We search far and wide to find these. But the answer truly lies within the safety of our own homes.
The problem is, we don’t like to ask for directions! And so we wander aimlessly.
According to a survey from a reliable British insurance company, men drive an extra 276 miles per year because they refuse to ask for directions. This costs us men an average of 3000$ in extra gasoline per lifetime! All because we do not stop to ask for directions!
I am absolutely a typical male in this respect, and so was my dad. He and I once attended a financial meeting together. We were in separate cars, and I drove immediately home after the meeting. He and my mom didn’t arrive until two hours after I did. By the time they finally arrived, my wife and I were frantic with worry, but when we asked him what happened, he simply answered: “We were sightseeing!”
My mom had a very different explanation!
Our stubbornness about not asking for directions keeps us away from finding what we are truly looking for. If only we would stop and ask our loving Heavenly Father for directions in life!
Men like dares though. So I am about to give you a dare. I dare you to come to your Heavenly Father to ask Him for directions in your life.
You know what you’ll find?
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. ” (Revelation 3:20, NIV2)
The whole time God has been with us, gently knocking on the doors of our heart. The problem is that we are more preoccupied by trying to find our own way that we don’t . . . listen to these gentle knocks!
But then, listening isn’t a strong point for most men, is it? Just ask our wives!
But if we don’t remove what is blocking our ears from hearing God’s voice, if we don’t stop trying to find our own way, we will remain clueless and we will continue to spend a fortune zooming right and left, but never finding satisfaction!
Meanwhile, God wants to dine with us. He wants us to be His friend, a friend that will never desert us, as most “friends” do. His kind of relationship is a Kingdom kind of relationship. Once we get to know Him, we discover that our Father has way bigger plans for us than we can ever anticipate.
“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs-heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” (Romans 8:16-17, NIV2)
This is exciting news. So exiting that I urge you to break the norm and to ask for directions! For it is guaranteed that these directions will lead you to become heirs of the Most High!
Uhhh. . .I’m lost and this GPS is useless! What do I do?
Remember . . . Asking directions will never hurt you. In fact, it can most assuredly save you for eternity!
