Fat Shampoo

Proverbs 4:7b – The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. (NIV)

My friend says that she’s figured out the answer to her weight problem. The label on her shampoo promises “extra volume and body”. Jokingly, (I trust!) She says that instead she will start using Dawn dish soap in the shower, because it promises to dissolve difficult-to-remove fat!

Wouldn’t it be great if life were this simple? We laugh at this example, but if we are honest, we, too, must admit that we’ve fallen for sillier things.

It would be wonderful to have enough wisdom to sort out life issues like this. After all, the Bible tells us to seek wisdom at all cost.

Proverbs 4:3-9 – When I was a boy at my father’s knee, the pride and joy of my mother, he would sit me down and drill me: “Take this to heart. Do what I tell you — live! Sell everything and buy Wisdom! Forage for Understanding! Don’t forget one word! Don’t deviate an inch! Never walk away from Wisdom — she guards your life; love her — she keeps her eye on you. Above all and before all, do this: Get Wisdom! Write this at the top of your list: Get Understanding! Throw your arms around her — believe me, you won’t regret it; never let her go — she’ll make your life glorious. She’ll garland your life with grace, she’ll festoon your days with beauty.” (MSG)

Oh, search for wisdom by all means, but how will we know when we have found it?

Maybe this verse will help:

1 Corinthians 1:30 – It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God — that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. (NIV)

If we know Jesus Christ as our personal Saviour and heed the advice for right living that He gives us in His Word, we have all the wisdom we need. We can take advantage of that wisdom instead of making our decisions based on worldly advice.

Prayer: Lord, when we struggle with decisions with far greater consequences than fat shampoo, remind us of Your grace and all that it means when we know Jesus Christ personally. Amen.
