Mark 1:17-18 “Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him.” (NLT)
“Do you want a spoonful,” she asked. It was a treat I couldn’t resist. Savoring the sweet thick liquid, I swirled it around my mouth, allowing it to coat every crevice, before letting it depart for my stomach.
My maternal grandmother introduced me to condensed milk. It was a regular bedfellow for cooking, and if my cousin and I were near she would always leave two teaspoonfuls in the can for our enjoyment.
So impressive was the taste that forty years later I still sneak a spoonful when my wife is baking. Recently, my cousin and his wife were enjoying homemade ice cream with us when I remarked, “Guess what I had a teaspoon of today.” Without hesitation, he said, “Condensed milk.” He’s still hooked too. What was it that kept us coming back?
As Jesus walked the shore by the Sea of Galilee, he encountered Peter and Andrew-two fishermen. He invited them to follow him and become fishermen of a different variety. Without question, they left all and obeyed. A little later, James and John followed suit.
What was it that led four businessmen to give up everything and follow someone they barely knew for a future with no assurances except they would become people fishers?
That which impresses draws our attention. It’s why I keep tasting and also why I continue following. I’m impressed by a God who loved enough to let his Son died for other’s sins. I’m enamored by a Son who would leave heaven for abuse, rejection, nails, death and a cold tomb.
It’s also why I pay attention to my example. I’m not looking for people to be impressed with me but with whom I follow. Since I represent Jesus, I must be careful what taste I leave with others lest they don’t return for more.
Jesus leaves a lasting impression-a thirst that is never quenched and one that keeps us coming back for more. Let your representation of him make a sweet impression on others.
Prayer: Merciful God, may we leave the sweet fragrance of Your love wherever we travel.
