I am sure that we have heard it before: “There is a first time for everything.” Locking keys in the car fits into this category, as I found out today. I have been driving for thirty years, and locking my keys in the car had eluded me until today. I had just dropped my son off at work and had decided to fill the car up with gas on my way home to get myself ready for work.

After pumping the gas, I went to open the door. It was locked, and there were my keys in plain sight on the seat. I called my husband, who was out of town, but hey — that’s what we do, right — call our mate. He called a friend, who drives a taxi and was only a few blocks away, to come and collect me.

Now here is where the dilemma started, as I was standing beside my car, now full of gas, but not going anywhere. I felt in my spirit the Lord’s prompting: “You can write a devotional on this.” I must admit that this did not go down so well with me. “O Lord, this is not funny. I am not going to tell anyone about this. How could You think it would make a devotional?” I was clearly not impressed, and standing there, the Lord and I had a chat. Along came my drive. Still fussing and chatting with the Lord as I got in, I said out loud, “Devotional.” My ride replied, “Kingdom keys: aren’t you glad we have the eternal keys in our sights?”

Upon getting back to the car with another set of keys, I opened the car. There were my keys on the seat, with my plainly visible keytag that says, “I Love Jesus”. As I got into the car, I smiled and praised the Lord for this awareness — alive again in my life today — “Yes, I love Jesus.”

1 Peter 4:13 – Instead, be very glad — for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world. (NLT)

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for the times in our lives — really, all the time — when You take an event and turn it around for Your glory. Help us not to get so lost in the moment and the frustration that we become unaware of You in all that we do and experience. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
