Yesterday, Christmas was celebrated around the world. But today, in Great Britain, there’s another important holiday – “Boxing Day.”

In the Middle Ages, the lords and ladies of England presented Christmas gifts in boxes to the servants, the day after Christmas, and tradition was established. Boxes of food were often given. It was also the day the “alms boxes” of donations given during the holiday season were opened in the churches and their contents distributed to the poor of the parish.

Boxing Day, also known as St. Stephen’s Day, is still a celebrated day in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Many people give gifts on this day to employees, and special people such as the mailman and paper boy.

This special day should be a reminder that there are many people who touch our lives that merit our personal thanks. During the coming year, let’s not wait for a holiday to express our thanks – anytime is the right time for gratitude.
