Angels and Diamonds

“I love the Lord because He hears my voice and my supplications. Because He has inclined His ear to me, therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live,” Psalm 116:1-2. As I read this verse this morning, I was reminded of what this verse has meant in my life…

Several years ago I made a trip to Norman, Oklahoma to spend some time with an Aunt who was moving out of the country. My husband and I did not have children yet, and since he couldn’t make the trip with me, I decided to go alone. I drove my aging Honda Accord and made my way there without any problems.

At the end of the weekend, I packed my old, beat-up Honda with sacks of clothes, plants, baskets and other goodies that my Aunt had given to me. As we packed the car, I silently prayed that my old car could make the 4- hour trip.

I had driven about 100 miles when it happened – one of my tires exploded as I drove down the highway. I swerved to the side of the road and began to cry uncontrollably. I had no idea how to change a flat tire and I was in the middle of nowhere on a late Saturday afternoon. Panic set in as I realized I had no money and no place to go. I buried my face in my hands and wept.

As salty tears ran down my face, a red truck pulled in front of my car. Before they had even turned off their engine, I simply prayed, “Lord, please send someone that will help me and not hurt me, Amen.” As soon as I uttered my prayer, the red truck sped away and a large white van pulled up behind me..

Three elderly women dressed in high heels and diamonds warmly greeted me. One woman wore a diamond ring on every finger! And another of the sweet little ladies wore a shirt that read, “I love Jesus!” I was in awe of God’s faithfulness and I was also very amused by the women he sent to help me. These women were praising God as they dried my tears, and they assured me that they were going to help me.

The women quickly unloaded my bulging car trunk and had the spare tire on my car in no time. They followed me to the next town and paid for a brand new tire for my pitiful old car. I hugged each woman tightly and thanked them for their kindness. Each woman grabbed my arm and reminded me of the verse in Psalm 34:17, “The righteous cry and the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.”

“God sent us to you today, honey. We were sent to help you,” they each explained. I nodded in agreement and thought of the simple prayer that I had prayed earlier that day.

I have never seen or heard from these women again, but I often think of “my angels” and I praise God that he allowed our paths to cross that day.

I have no doubt that my simply worded prayer was answered in a big way on that Saturday afternoon… God protected me and provided for me, and he sent me a few laughs along the way.

“Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your dwelling place, there shall no evil befall you, nor any plague or calamity come near your tent. For He will give His angels special charge over you to accompany and defend and preserve you in all your ways of obedience and service,” Psalm 91:9-11
