Consider the Lilies, Revisited

February 9, 2025

Consider the lilies of the field and how they grow; they do not toil nor spin, yet even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
~ Luke 12:27 KJV ~

“Consider the lilies of the field and how they grow; they do not toil nor spin, yet even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” (Luke 12:27 KJV)

They are unaware that more individuals than ever are depressed or afraid of dying or losing a loved one, keeping them up at night. Studies suggest this is the biggest concern. Even Christians are reluctant to talk about it. Lilies sleep blissfully throughout the bitter winter months, utterly ignorant of the state of our world! Unaware of its poverty, religious conflict, and wars, plus climate change, to name a few!

Meanwhile, the first snowflakes of winter danced like confetti as I watched them fall. The scenery outside quickly transformed from dull green to sparkling shades of white. All the lily fields bowed and said goodbye until spring. They vanished behind fluffy snow, one by one. Each flower fell into a deep winter sleep as if God had instructed them to, and neither the roaring winds nor the creaking pine trees above could wake them.

I sometimes wished I could have slept until spring. Like when I felt the horrible sting of losing both parents, whom I adored before I turned twenty-four. I had no idea God would ever heal my heart and fill it with three exceptional children and eight wonderful grandchildren!

Jesus spoke passionately about fear and worry. In His Sermon on the Mount, he used lilies to demonstrate God's beauty, compassion, and caring. He urges us to trust his Father's immaculate care. He made us in His likeness. Therefore, on those days when you can't sense His presence, try to rely on this truth. It will sustain you with strength to serve, endurance for hardship, and comfort in suffering.

"And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:20. ESV)

Dear friends, if you or someone you love is depressed or anxious, I know from personal experience that our loving God wants a trusting connection with us. As we surrender to God's healing power, doubt and fear will diminish, and you'll look forward to spring and a new beginning. Is it a better season than Christmas?

Jesus disclosed our greatest goal at the end of His sermon. Matthew 6:33–34. "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things (our needs) will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself." (NIV)

Prayer: Father in Heaven, thanks for watching over us 24/7, God. Thanks for wanting the best for your kids and honouring your promises. Forgive us when we foolishly try to control our life's challenges. Scripture states, You are the God of peace, not confusion. Father, help us when things seem hopeless. Instead, may we rest in Your love and enjoy Your unfathomable serenity. Amen.
