Flowers

"The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever." (Isaiah 40:8 NKJV)

"So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?" (Matthew 6:28-30 NKJV)

Bible verses about flowers are key for reminding us of the beauty of God's creation and His provision for our needs. In contrast, while the flower eventually fades, Jesus' love for us never does.

In the northern hemisphere, spring is the time of year when one frequently hears the proverb, "April showers bring May flowers."

You may be like me and have limited knowledge of flowers and how to help them grow and flourish. Or you may be like some of my friends, capable of encouraging successful blooming. In either case, I think that it is an almost universal fact that flowers make us feel better, whether they are singular or in a large setting. Flowers are a wonderful gift from God.

Flowers can be a non-verbal expression of love, sympathy, encouragement, or condolence that we often give and sometimes gratefully receive. For years, an elderly couple at our church faithfully delivered a potted plant to anyone who was sick or shut-in. It was a simple but powerful ministry that Eva and Fred performed.

I also observed the effect of flowers in 1991 when my seventh grandchild arrived. Matthew was a beautiful baby, but he had difficulty breathing, and after three days, God took him home. This was particularly difficult, not just for the parents, but for his three young siblings. Their home was almost overwhelmed by an abundance of flowers.

Who might God be prompting us to encourage with flowers today?

While we use flowers to express love for others, I marvel at how God communicates with us through nature, as expressed in 1912 by Austin Miles (1868-1946):

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses,
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known. (I Come to the Garden by Austin Miles)

Prayer: Dear Father, thank You for the beauty that You give us in nature. Thanks also for the opportunities to share that beauty with others. May we always be ready to share the love of Jesus in all we do. In His name, we pray. Amen.
