The days have become somewhat long for me since I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I find myself on a quest to fill those seemingly endless days. In the past it was easy enough to find my purpose; yet now that my purpose has obviously changed, I find that am constantly answers to the question, "why am I still here?"
But wait. Has my purpose truly changed?
It was actually while I was out walking by myself the other day, my phone firmly clipped to my belt, that God gave me the answer to that question. You see, I had seen and greeted a record number of people walking down the street that day. Surprising for the fact that it was threatening rain, it was windy and it was colder than most people like. Most people just returned my greeting and kept going, but I did notice the smile that crept on many of their faces as they headed on down the street. And there was the occasional person who needed a hand with something simple. My friendly greeting opened the door for me to be able to help them.
Suddenly I knew my purpose, and I realized it hadn't changed! Sure, what I do looks a lot different than it did in my pre-Alzheimer's years; but my purpose is still to help people! Just putting a smile on their faces can do so much! Who knows what they may have been contemplating, and my friendly greeting caused their morbid thoughts to flee! And in addition, it puts a smile on my face as well. I have found the secret to witnessing made simple.
It doesn't matter where you find yourself or how handicapped you are. God still has a kingdom purpose for you. Maybe it is something as simple as making someone smile or lending a helping hand. Whatever it is, remember that when you show love to someone, you are introducing them to God, for He is love!
Remember the powerful words of the brother of Jesus Christ: "In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, 'You have faith; I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds." (James 2:17-18 NIV). No matter what our situation, our faith in God must be accompanied by works. God always has a work for you to do. Even if it is something as simple as brightening someone else's day!
