If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones.

(Luke 16:10, NLT)

Shortly after joining the Army, a group of recruits stood in line as the sergeant handed out the day’s assignments. When the sergeant asked, “Does anyone here have experience with radio communications?”, one enthusiastic recruit — an experienced ham radio operator — quickly raised his hand and shouted, “I do!”

“Great,” said the sergeant. “You can dig the hole for the new telephone pole.”

I think it’s safe to say that wasn’t the kind of “radio work” that young soldier had in mind.

We’ve all had moments like that — times when we’re ready to step up and use our skills, only to be given a task that feels beneath us or entirely unrelated to our gifts. It’s easy to feel discouraged, overlooked, or convinced that our talents are being wasted.

But Jesus teaches us that faithfulness in the small things is the training ground for bigger things. God isn’t just interested in our abilities — He’s interested in our availability and dependability. Whether you’re digging holes, stacking chairs, changing diapers, or sweeping a room, no one else may see, but God does. And he values the heart behind the work far more than the size of the task.

Sometimes we think spiritual impact only happens through big moments — leading a ministry, going on a mission trip, or speaking in front of a large crowd.  But often, it’s the ordinary, humble tasks that shape our character and open doors of opportunity for greater influence later on.

That young soldier may have wanted to handle antennas and transmitters, but by digging the hole without complaint, he showed something more valuable than technical skill – he showed a willingness to serve wherever needed.

So, if you find yourself in a time in your life where your role feels small or unnoticed, don’t lose heart.  God often uses the “small stuff” to prepare us for the big stuff.  Your attitude in the “small stuff” is not only shaping your future — it’s bringing glory to God right now.

Prayer: Lord, help me be faithful, no matter the size of the task. Teach me to serve with a good attitude, even when the job feels small.  Help me trust that you are using every moment to prepare me for what’s coming next. In Jesus’ name, amen.
