No Excuse Good Enough

But [Jesus] said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many.  And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’  But they all alike began to make excuses.

(Luke 14:16-18 NIV)

Parents sometimes send the funniest notes to school. Consider these real examples, reportedly written to teachers:

  • “My son is under a doctor’s care and should not take P.E. today. Please execute him.”
  • “Please excuse John being absent on Jan. 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, and also 33.”
  • “Roland fell out of a tree and misplaced his hip.”
  • “Ray has very loose vowels.”
  • “We found Sunday’s paper on Monday and thought it was Sunday.”

These hilariously worded notes remind us of something more serious: we all make excuses — and sometimes ours are just as flimsy when it comes to God.

Jesus told a parable about a man who prepared a great banquet and invited many guests (Luke 14:16–24). But when it was time to come, they all started making excuses. One had land to inspect. Another had oxen to test. Still another had just gotten married. On the surface, their reasons might seem valid. But the point Jesus makes is clear: no excuse is good enough when you’re turning down the invitation of the King.

God has extended the most generous invitation ever made to enter his kingdom, to receive forgiveness, community, and eternal life.  But people still find ways to decline.

  • “I’m too busy right now.”
  • “I need to get my life together first.”
  • “Maybe later, when I’m older.”
  • “I’m not ready to give up control.”

Excuses may soothe our conscience, but they don’t change the fact that we’re turning down God’s invitation. Jesus ended his parable with a sobering truth: “None of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.” The opportunity wasn’t lost because they were unworthy, but because they were unwilling.

So, what’s your excuse? Whether it’s neglecting worship, avoiding a deeper commitment, or resisting Christ altogether, it’s time to lay down the excuses. The banquet is ready. The invitation has your name on it.  Don’t miss out because of an excuse.

Prayer: Father, thank you for inviting us into your kingdom and offering us the gift of life through Jesus. Help us to stop making excuses and to respond to you with willing hearts. In Jesus’ name, amen.
