“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.”
(Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV)
I sprayed Resolve, a stain removing agent, on the dirty pants, socks and shirts. After allowing the treated clothes to sit awhile, I lathered them up with a bar of soap and scrubbed them with a brush. Finally, they were ready for the washing machine.
My seven-year-old granddaughter loves to play in the sandbox, whether the sand is dry or soaking wet. Such play results in a lot of really dirty clothes and much scrubbing to render them clean. I realize that she does not intend to get her clothes so dirty, but when you love to play in the sandbox, dirt happens.
As adults, we outgrow the sandboxes of our youth, and move on to the sandbox of this world where dirt happens in other ways. The dirt of sin clings to us whether we realize it or not. Those grains of wrongdoing work their way into our lives, because we are imperfect people. We usually do not intend to dirty our lives with sin, but dirt happens.
So, what do we do about this sin, this dirt which invades our lives daily? Some folks believe that their salvation from sin comes by doing good deeds which in turn, scrub away the stain and the judgement of sin. According to Hebrews 9: 22 however, the law (of God) requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Good works will not cleanse our wrong doings. Pleas and promises will not wash away our sin. There is One however who will, and in fact already has: Jesus. In 1 Peter 3:18a we discover that Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.
So, as the old hymn, I Will Praise Him says: I will praise Him! I will praise Him! Praise the Lamb for sinners slain; Give Him glory, all ye people, for His blood can wash away each stain.
When we turn to Jesus Christ in repentance and sorrow for our sin, asking Him to enter into our lives to forgive and guide us, He is faithful to do so. He washes away our sins, past, present and future, the dirt which happens as we traverse the sandbox of this world.
Are you tired of scrubbing at your sins today? Consider taking a lifelong break by accepting God’s free gift of salvation, His Son, Jesus Christ, for though your sins be as scarlet, through Him they shall become as white as snow.
Prayer: Father God thank You so much that we can be cleansed from our sin, through the blood of Jesus. May many this day, avail them of this free gift You offer to all who believe, repent and accept Him into their lives. In Christ name. Amen.
