Deuteronomy 30:19-20a “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life.” NIV

As editor and publisher of our little local paper, as well as working 4 mornings a week as an administrator, I spend a lot of time on computers. And if there is one thing I have discovered about these electronic devices, it’s that you need to be able to control them. You need the means to make them do what you want them to do by means of a mouse or touch pad which is the equivalent to a mouse.

As I was considering this reality one day, when my mouse had died, it occurred to me that a computer mouse and its’ relationship to a computer is very similar to our will and its relationship with us. Without a will, we have no options of our own, the opportunity of choice is taken from us, for it is our will which allows us to act and be individuals. Our wills thus play a huge part in our life’s journey.

God gave us free will he realizes its’ importance and ability to lead us into life or death, blessings or curse. After leading the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt into the Promised Land, he thus took time to remind them of this vital aspect of their humanity when he stated:

“This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life.”

He gives us this same choice today, the option to use our will to choose life or death, blessings or curse. Which way will your mouse choose this day?

Prayer: Father God we thank you for the blessing of free will. Grant us the wisdom and heart for you that we need to choose the best option for our life that we might love you, listen to your voice and hold fast to Him. For the LORD is our life. In Christ’s name we ask. Amen.
