The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.
(Psalm 24:1 NIV)
Someone, author unknown, once compiled a humorous list called “Toddler’s Rules of Ownership”. Here are a few of those rules:
- If I like it, it’s mine.
- If it’s in my hand, it’s mine.
- If I had it a little while ago, it’s mine.
- If I’m doing or building something, all the pieces are mine.
- If it looks just like mine, it’s mine.
- If it’s yours and I steal it, it’s mine.
We laugh at these rules because toddlers are childishly selfish, still learning how to share. But the humor fades when we realize that the same attitude can quietly take root in those of us who are adults. How often do we cling to our possessions, achievements, or privileges as though they belong to us alone?
We all struggle with the concept of “mine.” We think, “If I earned it, it’s mine. If I paid for it, it’s mine. If I drive it or live in it, it’s mine.” But Scripture challenges us to see life differently. The truth is, nothing ultimately belongs to us. As the Psalmist declared in Psalm 74, “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.” (NIV) God owns it all!
That means that we’re not owners but stewards. Everything we have — our money, our homes, our time, our abilities — has all been entrusted to us by God to be used for his purposes.
When we understand the concept of stewardship, our attitude changes. Possessions become opportunities to do good, to bless others, and to point people to God. Selfishness loosens its grip, and generosity begins to flow naturally.
Paul reminds us in 1 Timothy 6:17–18 that God “gives us richly all things to enjoy.” And because he does, we are to “do good….be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share.” (NIV)
Praise God, who gives us all that we need. Our role is not to hoard it or to claim it as “mine,” but to honor God by being faithful stewards, generous with what he has graciously given, eager to use his gifts for his glory.
Prayer: Father, thank you for your countless blessings in my life. Teach me to live as a faithful steward, willing to give, ready to share, and quick to do good. Help me let go of my selfishness and embrace generosity in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
