This Old House

“I will be your God throughout your lifetime until your hair is white with age, I made you and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.” (Isaiah 46:4 NLT)

Through the window of my eyes, I see everything as a young woman. I often comment that I am still a young woman but now looking out the window of an old house. My house now crackles and creaks when I stand, and pain has invaded every room. With my hand folded above my aging eyes, I see dimly through the cloudy windows when before things were crisp and exploding with color. Crow’s feet now exaggerate the lines of the windows as “laugh lines” decorate my mouth. My hair has turned white but through the windows of my mind I am till “Jeanie with the light brown hair”! The walls of each room bulge from years of gravity, taking its toll as the curtains of their windows blow in the breeze of life’s chilly realities.

My eyes behold the next generation from afar as they all endeavor to live their lives with the vigor of youth, not aware of how quickly the years flee from our grasp. Plans swirl in their minds as once swirled in mine. With their futures still unfolding, they sit ready to embark on the adventure before them. My window, though sometimes cloudy, can see perfectly into a time when this young woman will have a new house, a new home where the pain is no more and the Savior’s own hand dried tears. This “old house” serves me fine for now, and I hope to watch my brood grow and flourish.

My prayer is that each one will know the Lord and that I will stand in Heaven someday and watch them cross that river to an eternity with our Lord in the house He has gone to prepare.

“Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story.” (Psalm 107:2a NLT)
