Our Anchor

“This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.” (Hebrews 6:19 NLT)

We were off to fish our hearts out at our “secret” place. For years we went to a little-known lodge in Wisconsin. A friend years ago had recommended this place on a lake that was known for its good crappie fishing. To get to this fishing hole that we had caught lots of fish in the past we went across the lake, through a whistle that separated two lakes, then we had to make our way through a jungle of rock, tree stumps and weeds that draped over our little aluminum boat. At last, we were in the open and gratefully we remembered how to get there in the years before. I distinctly remember dropping anchor. For one thing we were to be very sneaky, not to let the other fisherman see us but what always struck me was waiting for the anchor to grab hold of a solid rock that would keep us from drifting away. It was always followed by a jolt that jerked everyone in the boat. If the anchor didn’t hold, we would drift away from our destination. The little boat spun round and round but always held tight to the rock that the banged-up anchor gripped. It didn’t matter if the blue and white paint was pealing from the iron weight. The anchor always held!

A while back as soon as my feet hit the floor, all I could think of was the words to a song that was sung years ago. At first all I could remember was, “Be very sure, be very sure.” Why it was on my lips that morning I had no idea since it had been years since I heard the song let alone sang it. I first looked up “Be very sure” with no results but later I was told the title of the song was, “In times like these.” Now what did this have to do with my 3:00 AM singing. This was not the first time I have awakened with a song on my heart but these were songs I had recently sang. Finding the lyrics to this song was like finding a treasure and so fit the times as well as my own hopelessness. I listened to the song several times and read the words that went with the beautiful melody. I wasn’t two sentences into the lyrics until I found it. This was what God had given me that morning.

“In times like these you need a Savior
In times like these you need an anchor
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock”

“This Rock is Jesus, yes, He’s the One
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock”

Yes! That was it! I need to remember as I see the things happening in this sometimes-evil world or as the song says,

“In times like these.
Be very sure, be very sure your anchor holds.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we are in desperate need of hope, strong and trustworthy. We see evil in every corner that makes us hopeless. Give us the Anchor for our souls. Amen

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:31)
