“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
(Isaiah 41:10 ESV)
“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”
(1 John 4:16 ESV)
Have you ever smelled something that brought back pleasant memories and made you smile? I have had that happen a few times. The last time was Friday. I was in the kitchen cleaning fruit for the youth group when my furnace kicked on. I smelled a very pleasant smell. It smelled like my Grandma Keller’s house did. Now I haven’t been in her house for over 30 years. It’s not even there anymore.
It’s not that I never went to visit, she ended up in skilled care after falling and breaking her hip. But I remember that smell. I can’t explain what it smells like but I just know it was her house.
Memories are a strange thing. You never know what will pop up next. I love memories of the things God has done for me. When I am feeling down, God will bring up a memory. That’s how it was Friday. I was feeling a little down and he sent me a smell that I associated with love.
God loves us so much. He gives us the desires of our hearts. But, like a good parent, He will also correct us. Yes, God will discipline his children. He has pulled me back a few times and told me no or wait. He will tell you no. If it’s not in our best interest, He says no. But focus on the good things God has done for you. Focus on the good memories. Look for the pleasant smells from days long gone.
Have a blessed day.
