You know, I don’t really consider myself old. Not in the real sense of the word. In fact, I really only begin to feel old when I think about how different the world is as compared to how it was when I was a child.
Take, for example, dietary traditions. It doesn’t seem that long ago that kids were given milk at break time at school. That was certainly the norm when I was in elementary school. In fact, in my day, or at least in my school, the milk was provided for free. Everyone had to drink their bottle of milk, which wasn’t a problem as far as I was concerned. I found it absolutely delicious! It’s funny, I don’t even like to drink milk anymore. Maybe the processing of milk has changed over the years? Or perhaps the milk just tastes different in Canada than it did back in the day in Belgium? I’m not sure, but in my mind, the most delicious part of my day was that bottle of milk provided to me by the school. I even remember how sad I was when I got to high school, and milk was no longer given out.
What amazed me was that certain kids didn’t like their milk… I remember wondering how it could possibly be that they didn’t like that delicious milk! Was there something wrong with them? There certainly wasn’t anything wrong with the milk, it was wonderful! So cool, so smooth…
Of course I now realize that everyone has different preferences when it comes to eating and drinking. Some of those kids never got milk at home, so they weren’t used to it. Others were rebellious. They didn’t want to drink their milk because it was something they had to do. I also realize that some people are allergic to milk. In fact, I’m married to one such person! But in the eyes of my childhood, not liking that milk was not even something I could comprehend. After all, it was so good for you!
We all have our preferences when it comes to just about everything in life. This includes foods, yes, but it also includes things like pastimes, vacation spots, choices of jobs, and yes, even religion. This doesn’t mean that we should avoid things that aren’t our preference; but sadly, that’s what so many people do. And just because something is or isn’t our preference doesn’t make it right or wrong. In the case of food, only eating the things that are our preferences could lead to malnutrition. This also goes for other things in life. For example, if we only work at something we really like, well, there might not actually be a job available that is something we really like. What then? And then there are our pastimes. These are good for relaxing, but everything must be in moderation. There is a time for pastimes. There is even a time for vacations. But there is also a time for working, cleaning house, cooking, etc.
And then there is religion. Sure we all have our preferences. But what if our preference isn’t Truth? What then?
Fortunately, although there are many religions in the world, there is only one that is Truth: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'” (John 14:6 NIV)
But we have all also been told that milk is good for us, when it actually isn’t good for certain people — my wife for example! How can we believe Jesus is the Truth just because He says He is? Hey, other religions say they are the truth as well! But they are all different, so it stands to reason that they can’t all be right! How can we know for sure?
We can know for sure because Jesus is the only one who follows up His claim to be God with proof. In Bible days, when He walked this earth, He performed miracles, things that could only be done by God: “When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’Jesus replied, ‘Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’” (John 11:4-5 NIV)
These miracles weren’t restricted to Jesus’ day either. The apostles preformed miracles in the early church, and we still see miracles happening in the name of Jesus, even today. If you have doubts about this, check out the recently published series, “Miracles From the Past“.
People have preferences, yes. But there is only one Truth. Whether or not you enjoy milk isn’t a critical preference; but whether or not you accept Jesus as Lord can have eternal consequences!
