Where are My Sunglasses?

This is a common question at my house. Both my husband and I have magnetic clips that cover our regular glasses, thus making them into prescription sunglasses. It’s a wonderful invention: Prescription glasses that can become sunglasses in an instant. The only problem is, those little magnetic clips can be very easy to lose!

One day during our recent trip to Quebec, my husband was frantically searching pockets, rifling through his briefcase, and in general, ransacking the car.

“What are you looking for?” I dared ask.

His response was desperate: “Have you seen my sunglasses?”

I glanced over at him and started to laugh. “They’re on your eyes!”

“What! No!” But his hands went to his glasses that were firmly affixed to his face, and sure enough, the magnetic clip was in place.

So often in life we long for things that we already have. We long for acceptance, love, peace, joy, honour, a good name, and wealth, to name a few, ever forgetting that we have all of those things in Christ!

Consider the following texts:

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27-28 NKJV)

“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11-12 NKJV)

“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” (John 15:9-10 NKJV)

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13-14 NKJV)

“For He says, In the time of favor (of an assured welcome) I have listened to and heeded your call, and I have helped you on the day of deliverance (the day of salvation). Behold, now is truly the time for a gracious welcome and acceptance [of you from God]; behold, now is the day of salvation!” (2 Cor 6:2 AMP)

“Tell those rich in this world’s wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage – to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life.” (1 Tim 6:17-19 THE MESSAGE)

“Wealth and Glory accompany me – also substantial Honor and a Good Name.” (Prov 8:18 THE MESSAGE)

Everything that this life has to offer is ours through Christ, and more!

Yet so often, just like my husband’s sunglasses, we don’t see it.

And just like he proceeded to ransack the car looking for them, we also do silly things. Some leave their families. Some put aside their God-given quest in search of a bigger salary. Some climb the ladder of success, stepping on the heads of their poor co-workers as they go, all in the name of getting something they already have in Christ!

Lord, forgive us for seeking the things of the world, when all we really need is You! Open our eyes to see that everything we need to complete and total happiness and contentment, we already have in You! Help us to stop seeking after the things the world says will bring happiness, and instead, help us to start seeking after You!
