The Magic of Encouragement

“If we are treated well, given a helping hand and encouraging word, that also works to your benefit, spurring you on, face forward, unflinching. Your hard times are also our hard times.” (2 Corinthians 1:6 MSG)

“So speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so you’ll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind. I know you’re already doing this; just keep on doing it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11 MSG)

When someone is down, just a visit can make him hopeful. At times a simple smile, can bring such hope.

In my career as a teacher, I often encouraged students. If a student was mocked by another, for example, that student would often start to cry or sulk. I found that just taking my time with the student would make such a difference. A smile would show up and a “thank you” would occur.

Another example involved students who had a hard time with math. Initially I tutored them individually in the mornings and during recesses. The only problem was that more and more students began to come and I couldn’t help them all. Eventually I had to change tactics. I encouraged students that were proficient in math to take one to three of the weaker students and tutor them. If there was any problem, I was able to help them. Instead of leaving the room frustrated, stating, “I don’t understand anything!”, they would leave with a smile. Many of them thanked me at the end of the year saying that they had never been able to understand math concepts until now.

This also makes me think of elderly people who live alone. Hardly anyone visits them. How would we feel if we were in their shoes? Why not visit them to encourage them? It would bring a huge blessing to the lonely elderly people, and in the end, not only will they be smiling, but you will also leave with a smile!

And what about those stuck in a hospital bed? Wouldn’t you be depressed in their shoes? One smile and some caring words could make the world of a difference.

My goal is to always encourage others. If they don’t need it, no one will be hurt; however, if someone is depressed, encouraging words will bring a smile to their faces. This encouragement can come via email, phone, Facebook, or any other forms of communication. The important thing is that an encouraging word WILL make a difference!

Let’s not forget that our Heavenly Father is an encourager: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

Are you an encourager?
