Matthew 25:35, 36 “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” NIV
Every eye in the congregation was transfixed by the light. The altar’s peace candle had melted down igniting the puddle of wax at its’ base, instantaneously transforming the flickering flame into a leaping dancing passion.
How timely I mused, as the minister, unaware of the transformation behind him, continued to speak of the need for every Christian to experience the ah ha moment of seeing Christ in the people around them.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 NIV
As I considered the speaker’s words and the transformation of the candle on the altar I found myself praying that God would ignite my heart anew with his love for all mankind, for as the prayer book in my lap stated, we whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world.
Today as I go about the business of my life I will be looking. I will be seeking the image of God in each and every person I meet. And through the power of the Holy Spirit I know I will find it, for God does not lie. The gas attendant, the shop clerk, the guest in the jail cell, the telemarketer, the ailing senior, the flippant teen, the sleeping child are all stamped in his image and deserve to encounter the passion of his love aflame within his people.
A love which when ignited by truth transfixes the eyes of the world upon the King of Love Himself.
Prayer: Father God ignite our hearts anew this day with the passion of your truth and love. Open our eyes to recognize your image in each and every one we encounter this day that our thoughts, words and deeds might be aflame with the love of Christ. In whose name we pray. Amen.
