Trusting God on the Curves

2 Samuel 22:31 “As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.” (NKJV)

My grandfather was swearing while clutching the door and probably wondering why he had let me do what he had. My cousin surely contemplated the same.

The terrific thing about a grandfather with a farm that had a number of dirt roads coursing through it was the periodic privilege of driving his truck even though not of legal age. Today was my turn. Trouble was I had never driven anything with a manual transmission. Nor had I ever explored the dirt road my grandfather chose.

After a brief lesson on shifting gears, I released the clutch and inched forward. We were soon cruising down the road and I was feeling proud. Suddenly the road seemed to end ahead but I couldn’t determine which direction it went. Not knowing what was meandering through my brain, my grandfather and cousin offered no advice.

Before I knew it, I was face to face with a ninety degree curve. I pressed the clutch instead of the brake which had absolutely no affect on our speed. We made the turn without flipping, but I wondered why there was no Stop sign or Curve Ahead notice for people unfamiliar with the territory.

David maintained God was a shield of protection for trespassers of unfamiliar terrain. His conclusion was based on experience. When he fought sheep snatchers. When one of his sons ran him out of town. When King Saul tried to murder him, and when another son’s life was hanging in the balance.

Curves. Some ninety degrees. Others one hundred and eighty. Some take us up and others down, but they have one thing in common. We can’t spot what’s around any of them. And therein lay the trust factor David knew all too well.

I’ve faced a few curves myself, but I’ve discovered while I may not know what’s coming, God does. He’s already toured the other side of the curve and can prepare me to face the unknown, the scary, and the dangerous. And he’ll do the same for you.

Prayer: Father, when we can’t see around life’s curves, remind us You already have.
