You just never know what you’re going to pick up when you go to Pret A Manger. You also don’t know what you’re going to leave behind.
What’s that? You’ve never gone to a Pret A Manger? You don’t even know what a Pret A Manger is? Well, I didn’t either until I read last week’s story about Korean-born violinist Min-Jin Kym.
You see, Pret A Manger is a British sandwich chain, sort of an upscale Subway. Pret A Manger is the place where Min-Jin Kym went to grab a bite to eat.
After going to the store, Min-Jin Kym noticed she had lost something. Specifically, she had lost a 300-year-old Stradivarius violin worth close to $2 million. With two rather nice bows, bows which were also in the case, the total for her loss comes to somewhere around $2.1 million.
Now there’s no point in me saying anything about such forgetfulness. There is nothing anyone can say that would make Min-Jin Kym — or her insurance company — feel worse than they do.
What I would like to do is point out that there are hundreds of millions of people who are forgetting something, make that Someone, far more valuable than the most exclusive of violins.
Indeed, many of these millions are probably even shaking their heads and fingers at Min-Jin Kym. They’re asking, “How can you not pay attention to something that valuable, that important, that special?”
I imagine the Lord in heaven is asking the same thing of them. Our Heavenly Father must be amazed so many people continue to forget they are sinners and that they desperately need a Savior. So many forget the clock is ticking and the day will come when they will not be able to believe in the Christ who was born, lived, died and rose to save them.
So, I guess there are two petitions we need to bring before the Lord today: one for Min-Jin Kym and one for the millions of unbelievers. Both have forgotten something very special.
THE PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, forgetfulness can have its consequences. In the case of Min-Jin Kym it has meant the loss of some special personal property. For millions of others, their forgetfulness means the loss of a Savior and the blessings He bestows. Today I ask the little Korean girl may get her violin back, and the unbelieving world may be given the gifts Jesus died and rose to provide. In the Savior’s Name. Amen.
