Have you ever opened your mouth when you shouldn’t?

I have. If you’re nodding your head in agreement, take comfort, we’re not alone.

Yesterday, a listener sent in an article that told how, in the 1800s, Lord Kelvin, president of Britain’s Royal Society, stated that the fledgling invention of the radio had “no future.” He also said “flying machines are impossible.”

About the same time, a British parliamentary committee said Edison’s light bulb was “unworthy of attention of practical or scientific men.”

The worst foot-in-your-mouth instance I know of came from our country when, in 1889, the director of the United States Patent Office urged President William McKinley to close down the office because “everything that can be invented has been invented.”

So, Daily Devotioners, what can we learn?

Simply this — be careful what and whom you believe. Human wisdom isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The facts of today can easily become the falsehoods of the future.

That’s why I get considerable comfort from knowing that God’s wisdom and direction for living has held up for thousands of years. While the brilliance of human brains come and go, God’s wisdom is something that we can all trust; His crucified and risen Son is the one in whom we can place our faith without fear or reservation.

THE PRAYER: Wise and all-knowing Lord, grant us the grace to place our faith and trust in what comes from You and not be led astray by our own thoughts or the world’s opinions. This I ask in the Name of Jesus who gave His life for my salvation. Amen.
