A Trust Lesson

Matthew 6:31-32 – So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” Or “What shall we drink?” Or “What shall we wear?” For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. (NIV)

Once, while my husband was studying for his master’s degree, we were down to our last five dollars. We were out of staples like milk, bread, sugar, and eggs. I asked my studious husband if we could make a run to the grocery store. He gave me one of those looks that said, “Where are we getting the money?”

“I’ve still got five dollars from my last pay check.”

He said, “Let’s see what we have in the penny jar.”

We counted every penny, then made a careful list. It didn’t include sugar, which at that time — due to a crop failure — was over five dollars for five pounds. On the way to the store, I prayed, “Lord, You know what we need and what we want. I know You’ve said for us not to worry, but sometimes, I still do. It would be nice if I could get a bag of sugar to make cookies for the kids. So I’m leaving that to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Presumptuous? Maybe. But I think our heavenly Father likes it when we ask Him for special things so we can do something nice for someone else.

Anyway, we got everything on our list except the sugar. Then we headed home. As we arrived, we saw a box wedged between the front screen and the door. It was a box of groceries. Sitting right on top was a five-pound bag of sugar!

In the interior places in my soul, I felt my worry-wart self challenged by Jesus to walk with deeper trust in God’s loving provision. This lesson in trust challenged my tendency to worry.

Prayer: Loving Lord, You know what we need and what we want. We know You’ve said for us not to worry, but sometimes, we still do. We pray that You would increase our faith so that we may trust You more and more. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
