If Only I Could be a Fly on the Wall

I once encountered a pleasant, middle-aged individual volunteering at a local theatre. I already knew how much seats to this particular show cost (125$ to 750$ per seat!), and I couldn’t help wondering why anyone would want to be a volunteer in such ritzy place. I mean, the hours of training in preparation for each show would be no easy task, to say nothing of the long hours until late in the night during show times. It would be far from desirable for most people!

Her response astonished me beyond bounds: “This way I get to see at least some of the production. I wouldn’t be able to afford tickets otherwise!”

Some of the production? I wondered. Would that be enough to motivate someone to volunteer such long and gruelling hours?

Then it hit me: what wouldn’t I do to be a fly on the wall of the president’s (or prime minister’s) office? Not for the purpose of spying. No. My purpose would be to see our leaders in action, to catch a glimpse of how much he or she cares for the inhabitants of his or her country! Just the opportunity to do such a thing would be enough to make many of us volunteer to be that fly, no matter how hectic our daily tasks! We might even be willing to forget our job and responsibilities! Wouldn’t it be one of our greatest honours?

Then again, wouldn’t it be an even greater honour if we could see the King of Kings in action? What about living as a fly on the wall of His household? Just the thought of it fills me with adrenaline. What a privilege it would be! How I would love to experience first-hand how tender and caring the King of Kings really is towards all of His creation!

But you know what? We don’t need to become flies on the wall to see the King of Kings in action! He invites us home as His own daughters and sons!

“I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Cor 6:18 NIV)

“You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus…” (Gal 3:26 NIV)

How can we know for certain that we will be welcomed with open arms? Do we have to earn this?

“Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.” (Gal 4:6-7 NIV)

Our current physical manifestation that we have been accepted in God’s family is God’s Spirit Himself who has made His home in us. Wow!

Didn’t Jesus promise that he would be preparing a place for us in Heaven?

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” (John 14:1-4 NIV)

He is not just preparing a plain, simple, empty room in some kind of a slum in Heaven, although this would be far more than I deserve, but He is preparing a beautifully adorned room in the palace of the High King Himself! No need to wish to become a fly any longer. We can live with the High King Himself, who will accept us as His own sons and daughters. What an honor, made possible by the one who died for us on a solitary cross two thousand years ago. His resurrection power is now part of our own lives! Youpppi!

“I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.” (Eph 1:18-21 NIV)

What is that speck on the wall? Quick! Get the broom!!!
