Ganged up On

Have you ever felt ganged up on? You know, some other people taking sides against. You. That has happened to me several times. There are two people in particular that have ganged up on me, they are God and my wife.

One time we were on a short weekend get away in a neighboring town. They have some of these “outlet” stores in this town, with things marked down. I made the mistake of telling my wife that I was going to take a nap. She used that opportunity to go to one of those outlet stores. Then she came back and woke me up. She seemed excited. She told me that the outlet store had a couple of dresses that really fit her well. She asked if she could buy them. I did the responsible, husband, keeper of the budget thing, and told her, no. I told her that we couldn’t afford it. She was persistent and told me how good they looked and what a good deal they were. She asked if I could at least come and look at them. Since I am a considerate husband, I consented to go. She tried on the dresses, and looked at me with those blue eyes of hers as if to say “pleeeeeeease.” I caved in. It was wrong. I gave in to pressure and messed up the budget with another “exception.”

Then we were driving around and I got a call from a friend. He told me that my name was in the paper. He said it was in an ad called “unclaimed funds.” It had a number to call. I called the number and they told me of some money they were holding in my name. You are going to think I’m making this up, but it was the same as the price of the dresses, to the dollar.

Another time we were finishing up a house that we had built. We had spent more than we planned. My wife wanted to do some landscaping. I told her we didn’t have any money for that. Something unexpected happened. She was probably praying. We were cleaning out the garage and there were a variety of left over building materials. I took them back and got a debit card with the amount of the refund. I decided to let her have the debit/refund card. Wouldn’t you know it, that when she went to the store, all of the plants were on sale at half price. She was really happy and loaded up the truck. She had a great time planting all of it, and our yard looks really nice.

The bottom line of course, was not that God and my wife were ganging up on me, but that the Lord wanted me to bless my wife. Now that I think about it, virtually every time I have blessed my wife, the Lord has blessed and provided. “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.”1Peter 3:7.
