Digging a Bit Deeper

John 17:26 – And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them. (NKJV)

My husband and boys decided to put in a sprinkler system for the front lawn. It would come on and water on our designated day in the early morning hours before the heat of the day.

Installation of this meant digging up the front lawn, with a trench down each side of the lawn from the house to the road. They began the digging, and soon our lawn and walk was covered with dirt and dug-out grass, and there stood two long trenches awaiting the piping that would be buried in the ground.

I began to look into these mounds of dirt and the holes created, and I witnessed many worms and bugs and roots that were now revealed from the digging. I began to wonder if the lawn would look the same once they were done. I knew the process would be a short-term pain for a long-term gain.

Our lives are also like that. At times we need to allow the Lord to do some gentle gardening in our lives. Sometimes this reveals roots, dirt, and even a few bugs that we have allowed to remain in our lives. Being kind as He is, He does this tenderly and with grace for us. Though pain may be present, we can rest assured that the pain will be short in relationship to the gain of eternal life with our Lord.

Psalm 23:4 – Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (NIV)

Prayer: Dear Lord, we praise and thank You for the gentleness with which You work in our lives. Help us always to be striving in our relationship with You. We do want the areas of our lives that are not pleasing to You to be uncovered and brought into a right relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
