Too Busy to do Housework

It’s been one of those way too busy weeks. I’ve been much too busy to do housework. Of course, when something has to go from the to-do list, I have to admit, I really love scratching the cleaning off my list.

Imagine me trying to be sincere as I whine, “I so wish I had time for that dusting, but, alas, I just can’t squeeze it in today.”

Of course, now it’s getting a little out of control around the house. If it’s true that a messy home is a happy home, we’re nearing hysterics here.

So I’ve decided to revisit the plan where we just leave the dust where it is, put a nice urn on the coffee table, and if anyone drops by unexpectedly, we just say, “Yeah, I know it’s a little different, but this is where Great Aunt Hepsebeth asked us to spread her ashes.”

Okay, I admit it. There are better things we can spread. Psalm 9:11 says, “Tell his stories to everyone you meet” (MSG). Whether we meet them at the grocery store, on the job, at school, at the gym–we can even spread the news of our God who saves to those who come to our door unexpectedly. There’s an entire crop-ful of people who need to hear. They’re practically sitting in their own ashes. And every time we tell his stories, we’re planting seeds. Jesus said in John 4:35-36, “Look around you! Vast fields are ripening all around us and are ready now for the harvest. The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!” (NLT).

Planting and harvesting people to eternal life is so much more joy-filled than even the cleanest house. It’s better than having a coffee table dust-free without a speck of any pretend relative on it. Joy awaits us when we spread the good news that God saves through the sacrificial death of his Son, Jesus.

So go ahead and spread the news to those around you. Hey, you might even call your Great Aunt Heppie. The real live one.
