Awesome God

Matthew 5:14 – You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. (NIV)

I was given a black T-shirt with the words “Awesome God” on the front and back. One particular day, I had this shirt on under a sweater as my son and I went to play mini-golf. At this location, they have glow-in-the-dark mini-golf, which means that any white one is wearing glows. My sweater had white stripes, and it glowed; so did our shoelaces and other bits of white we had on. As we were playing, everyone present could see people both up close and in the distance with glowing white articles of clothing.

Then I remembered that the person who had given me the T-shirt had said that it glowed in the dark. So I took my sweater off, and sure enough, the logo on the front was glowing. I turned around for my son to see. He exclaimed that my whole back was glowing, as it had the words, “Awesome God” and a picture of the world covering half the shirt. When I began to notice white specks dotting the shirt, I tried to flick them off, but they wouldn’t go. The whole shirt was covered with them — they were stars.

As we played our game, I am sure that other people noticed the words and picture on the shirt, but the sad thing is that no one questioned it. Could it be that they were all Christians? I think probably not.

I am sure that the people around heard me commenting to my son and asking him if it was still as bright as when I had taken my sweater off. We had a great time together, and we kept looking at the shirt, at times trying to count the stars, too numerous to count.

Even though words were not shared with others about the Lord, I am certain that my son and I showed the world in this instance through our actions — and words to each other — that we have something not of this world.

Matthew 5:15 – Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. (NIV)

Prayer: Dear Jesus, we are thankful and proud to bring light to the world for You. Help us all to bring Your light into a world of darkness. Help us not to overlook opportunities that we are given to witness for You. Give us boldness to proclaim You in all that we say and do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
