I think forgiveness is one of God’s greatest gifts to us, to receive and to give. Two weeks ago my mother was killed in a tragic car crash in Vineland, Ontario which also took the lives of her two friends, who were traveling with her. Their car was hit broadside by a car driven by a 17-year old boy, who ran a stop sign at a very high rate of speed on a country road two blocks from my mother’s home.

My brother and I met with the boy, offered him forgiveness and support, and hugged him. If you’ve ever looked into the eyes of someone whose bad judgment resulted in something so horrible, and seen the self-loathing, shame, remorse and fear …. you’ll know that forgiveness is the only response.

As my brother said, “That was the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.”
