On Monday, we looked at the lessons we can learn from David in Psalm 5:1-3. This devotional will focus on one more lesson from these same verses:
“Listen to my words, Lord, consider my lament. Hear my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” (Ps. 5:1-3 NIV)One thing that never ceases to amaze me about David was how much he was in love with our Heavenly Father. He so desired to hear God’s voice, to know that God cared for him. He truly hungered for God, so much that he would listen and wait just to hear His voice. It made him feel closer to the Heavenly Father he loved so much.
How is it that David could love God so much?
It is no different than for each of us. The more David knew God, the more he fell in love with Him; and the more we come to know our Heavenly Father, the more we will fall in love with Him as well! David also had no qualms about letting God know how he felt. “Consider my lament”, he said. “Hear my cry for help”. “In the morning, Lord, I lay my requests before You.” Sure God knows what we need before we even ask, but He wants us to ask. It makes Him feel good that we trust Him enough to lay out our requests before Him. And when we ask, He wants us to wait expectantly, ever knowing that our loving Heavenly Daddy will come through. I remember when my kids were little. How I missed them when I was at work, how it made my heart so full of joy to come home and have them run to me to give me hugs. I would do anything for those two boys, and they knew it. But more than anything, I loved it when they came to me with their little problems. It made me feel so special.
Is that how God feels?
Not at all. My love for my boys was so minimal compared to how perfectly and completely God loves each of us! If I longed for my boys, how much more does He long for us! If I hoped my boys would feel comfortable confiding in me, how much more does God desire for us to confide in Him, to give Him our problems!
Once in heaven, I would like to be close to my Heavenly Father. I want to hear His voice first thing in the morning. That will make me so happy!
When we follow our Heavenly Father, when we spend time with Him, it becomes more and more apparently just how much He loves us. After all, Jesus died on the cross just to save us! And He continues to pour out His blessings upon us day in and day out.
Let’s remember something from David. May hearing God’s voice become the desire of our hearts as well! May we do as David did: Lament, cry out to Him, lay out our requests before Him – and then wait expectantly for Him to move!
Our Father cares and He never will ever forget us.
